PORNOGRAFIA • Witold Grombrowicz
Grove Press / 1966 / First edition
Hardcover / 191 pages

Witold Gombrowicz was born in Poland in 1904. He published his first book, a volume of stories, in 1933. Four years later he established himself as one of the leaders of the avant-garde movement in Poland with the publication of his now world-famous novel Ferdydure, which has the distinction of having been banned first during the German Occupation, then by the Polish government during the Stalinist era following the war, and finally in 1957, shortly after a reprinting of the book was permitted.

When war broke out in 1939, Gombrowicz was in Argentina and he remained there for twenty-five years, virtually unknown, while continuing to write his novels stories, and plays. Pornografia is the third of his novels in order of composition, but the second to be published in English.
